Northern UAE beach closed as precaution after tanker oil spill

DUBAI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Sharjah, a northern emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have temporarily closed Al Hamriyah Beach in its northern coast as a precaution against potential pollution from an offshore tanker oil spill, the Sharjah Government Media Bureau said Friday.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the bureau said specialized teams were taking necessary measures to protect the coastline and prevent oil pollution from reaching the beach.

The bureau urged fishermen and other sea users to comply with official safety instructions.

The closure follows an oil spill from a tanker off the UAE's northern coast that has affected beaches in neighbouring Umm Al Quwain, another UAR emirate.

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said earlier that all beaches and coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain had been temporarily closed.

The tanker has not been officially identified, and the cause of the leak remains unclear.
