At least 2 dead, 20 injured in fireworks incident in U.S. Hawaii

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 20 more were injured in a fireworks incident in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the early hours of New Year's Day, according to local authorities and media.

The Honolulu Police Department said in a Facebook post after midnight that the department and multiple agencies "are responding to a major incident in the area of Keaka Drive" and urged people to "avoid the area as first responders provide medical and other assistance."

The department confirmed later in an update that "This is a fireworks-related incident with multiple casualties" and police, fire, and emergency medical crews are at the scene providing care and security.

Paramedics on scene were able to identify a total of 22 patients, reported the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the largest daily newspaper in Hawaii, citing the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.

"Of the 22 patients, 2 were pronounced dead on scene and 20 were transported in serious or critical condition to various hospitals throughout the island," the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services was quoted as saying.
