Lithuania says drone entering its airspace destroyed

VILNIUS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- An air alert was issued shortly after midnight Tuesday in Vilnius and surrounding areas after a drone entered Lithuanian airspace, according to the country's National Crisis Management Center (NKVC).

The National Crisis Management Center said NATO fighter jets were scrambled in response to the threat and about 30 minutes after the initial alert, authorities reported that the drone had been destroyed in the air over Kaunas district. The air threat alert was then lifted.

NKVC Director Vilmantas Vitkauskas confirmed that a drone had been detected and that NATO fighter jets were activated in response. He said further details could not immediately be disclosed.
