TEHRAN, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A Sunni cleric was killed Monday evening by unidentified gunmen in Iran's southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, the official news agency IRNA reported.
The cleric, identified as Molavi Yousef Gorgich, was the prayer leader of a mosque in Zahedan County and was assassinated at the entrance to his home in the same county, IRNA cited Zahedan Governor Jamshid Rakhshani-Nasab as saying.
The governor added that the cleric was "actively engaged in the fight against divisive elements and Zionism," noting that further details about the incident would be released later.
Sistan and Baluchestan, a province bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been hit by multiple terrorist attacks targeting civilians and security forces in recent years.
