A LETTER, purportedly using the letterhead of the Traffic and Transport Branch of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent, is circulating on WhatsApp.
It is signed by one "Supt Jamil bin Abdul" and invites recipients to a Hari Raya Aidilfitri event while asking the public for donations.
Is the city's traffic police department really hosting such an event and seeking sponsorship?
VERDICT:

FALSE
In a statement on Friday (March 20), the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department has denied issuing such a letter.
Bernama quoted department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa as saying that his team detected the fake letter via WhatsApp at 5.50pm on Thursday (March 19).
"A check found that no such officer exists in our records.
"The department stresses that no official letter was issued for the purpose of requesting donations from any party," he said.
ACP Zamzuri said the letter was believed to be an attempt to cheat people of money and damage the image and credibility of the Royal Malaysia Police.
He said a police report has been made to enable further investigation of the letter.
"The public is advised to always be vigilant and not be fooled by any dubious donation requests.
"Any confirmation can be made directly with the department at 03-2071 9999, its hotline at 03-2026 0267/ 0269, or the nearest police station," he added.
