Police arrested a couple and seized a packet of suspected syabu weighing 0.22g after a one-hour chase in Tengkera, Melaka, on Wednesday (Oct 15).
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Halim Abas said a special team from the district headquarters' Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department apprehended the 39-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman in a red sedan at 7.20pm.
"At 6.20pm on Wednesday, the vehicle driven by the suspects was spotted acting suspiciously near an apartment in Tengkera.
"When ordered to stop for checks, the driver sped off. The suspect drove dangerously, including against traffic on several main roads in Melaka to evade arrest," he said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 15).
ACP Halim said the suspects abandoned their vehicle at a dead end near a mosque in Kampung Sungai Putat and tried to escape on foot before being detained.
Police found a transparent plastic packet of suspected syabu in the vehicle.
Preliminary urine tests on both suspects were positive for methamphetamine.
He said background checks showed the male suspect has eight previous records, including seven drug-related offences and one crime case. The female suspect has 11 previous records, including 10 drug cases and one crime case.
"Both suspects have been remanded for four days starting Thursday until Sunday to facilitate investigations under Sections 186 and 279 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said. — Bernama
