PETALING JAYA: Rising global prices of memory chips (RAM) make owning a new laptop a pricey affair, so offers for free laptops will gain anyone's attention.
An advertisement on social media is offering just this, using logos of government ministries and Bank Negara Malaysia.
But has the government actually launched a free laptop assistance programme?
Verdict:

FALSE
The Finance Ministry said that is no such programme and that they are not accepting any applications for such a programme
The advertisement does not provide any contact information and only provides a "Sign Up" button for users to click on.
"The public is advised that there is no application process for such a free laptop assistance as claimed in viral posts on social media and unofficial websites.
"The public is advised not to click on suspicious links, not share personal information with unauthorised sources, and to always verify information through the official ministry channels," it said in a Facebook post on Thursday (March 12).
The ministry advised the public to only rely on verified information from its website www.mof.gov.my, and its official social media accounts.
"Stop the spread of fake news. Check before you share," the ministry said.
