A video has gone viral of a policeman hanging off the side of a speeding vehicle, supposedly in an attempt to stop a suspect from driving off in Kuching. Did this really happen?
VERDICT:
TRUE
According to Kuching OCPD Asst Comm Alexson Naga Chabu, the incident occurred around 1.30pm on Saturday (Jan 31).
Police were trying to detain a 35-year-old suspect driving a white Perodua Viva on Jalan Kuching-Serian heading towards the Kuching city centre.
"The suspect was spotted by police following investigations into a house break-in case on Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho reported on Jan 30, in addition to several cases of motorcycle theft around Bandar Kuching.
“The suspect refused to cooperate and acted aggressively while trying to escape. In the incident, a police officer suffered injuries in several parts of his body while trying to arrest the suspect,” he said.
ACP Alexson said the suspect was finally nabbed in the Taman Berjaya area, Mile 4 ½, Jalan Penerissen, when he tried to flee and crashed into several vehicles on the flyover.
He added that a urine screening test conducted on the suspect found that the man tested positive for drugs, while further checks also found that the suspect had 20 priors on his criminal record.
A dashcam footage posted by reddit user whusler showed how the suspect’s vehicle was slowly overtaken by police in plainclothes and an unmarked car.
Just moments later, the suspect veered his car to the right and pressed forward with a policeman clinging to the car.
As a result of the moving vehicle, the policeman fell and rolled onto the road with other policemen continuing their pursuit of the suspect.
