QuickCheck: Is the viral video of a car crash in Genting Highlands real?


THE dangers of reckless driving are two-fold. It puts the driver in danger and makes a menace to others on the road as well.

Some people may feel a twinge of schadenfreude when they witness careless driving resulting in misfortune.

Recently, a short viral video circulated online, showing a dangerously speeding car losing control and crashing.

It was reported that the incident occurred at one of the numerous turns en route to Genting Highlands.

Is the video real?

Bentong OCPD Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar said that initial investigations revealed the accident shown in the video, which went viral since Nov 8, actually occurred at about 12.30am on Oct 5.

"The vehicle was believed to have skidded and crashed into a road divider before spinning towards the left side of the road.

"The 24-year-old local male driver did not sustain any injuries in the incident, although his car was badly damaged," he said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 9).

He said a police report has been lodged, and the case was being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for careless driving.

"The Bentong Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division has contacted the driver to assist in investigations related to the viral video," he added.

Supt. Zaiham urged anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward to help with the investigation.

He added that Bentong police would continue to carry out strict enforcement operations to ensure the location of the incident and other nearby routes are not used as illegal racing tracks by reckless drivers and motorcyclists.

"We will not hesitate to take firm action against any individuals found driving or riding dangerously and disregarding traffic laws," he said.
