VERDICT
TRUE
A private college student was caught driving against traffic on the EDL Highway in Johor Baru on Monday (Aug 18).
The incident occurred around 10.30 am when the teenager, driving a Hyundai Elantra, mistakenly entered the wrong lane after passing through the Sultan Iskandar Building area.
Johor Baru Selatan OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat explained that the driver entered the highway going northbound against the flow of traffic.
"He continued driving until he realised the mistake, prompted by other vehicles honking and flashing their lights," ACP Raub said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 19).
After approximately five minutes of driving against traffic, the driver turned back towards Johor Baru.
Fortunately, no accidents were reported during the incident. Both urine and alcohol tests for the driver were negative.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
ACP Raub emphasised the seriousness of such offences, saying that "reckless and dangerous driving is a serious offence that can endanger the safety of other road users. Firm and uncompromising action will continue to be taken against any individuals who break the law and threaten public safety."
