QuickCheck: Did an 'elevated highway opening ceremony' hoax circulate in Negri Sembilan?

MOTORISTS in Negri Sembilan might have been thrilled at the prospect of an elevated highway being constructed in the state.

According to an image that was widely circulated on social media last week, the "opening ceremony" for the "Pedas-Kuala Pilah Elevated Highway" was to take place on Saturday, Feb 22.

The image also included photographs of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, among others.

However, some users pointed out that such a project was unlikely.

So, was this claim a hoax?

VERDICT:

TRUE

In a statement last week, the Works Ministry labelled the image as "info palsu" (false information) and strongly urged the public not to spread fake news.

It issued a reminder that sharing false content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and offenders are liable to a fine, jail, or both if convicted.
