QuickCheck: Did two men ditch their motorcycle and dash into the jungle to escape police?

IN WHAT some social media users described as a scene from an action comedy, two men are seen in a viral video abandoning their motorcycle and fleeing into the jungle from an approaching police car.

One of the men is seen still wearing his helmet while running headlong into the tree line.

The "great escape" reportedly took place in Sabah's Kota Marudu district.

Did this happen there as claimed?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Kota Marudu OCPD Supt Simiun Lomudin confirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday morning (Feb 2) when a team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division was conducting patrols for Ops Selamat 23 along Jalan Rakit and Jalan Sumbilingon.

"Our patrols spotted a motorcycle with two men. As the police vehicle approached, the duo panicked, abandoned their bike, and ran for it," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 4).

The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, with netizens amused by the sight of the helmet-wearing "fugitive" sprinting along the road before disappearing among the trees.

“The officers did not pursue them into the jungle, as they ran into the thick undergrowth.

“No accidents occurred, and no arrests were made, but the motorcycle was seized for further investigation.

"We have identified the owner, and a summons has been issued under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” Supt Simiun added.

He reminded the public not to flee from police checks, as such acts not only have serious legal consequences but could also lead to dangerous situations.

The video posted by Facebook user She Ru sparked a flurry of amusing comments, including one from Aegis Focker who praised the man for managing to run with his helmet on.

User Saharudin Ngah commented: “Kelakor... fikirannya cukup bagus...blh berfikir dalam keadaan sedemikian...blh dibawa berperang apabila diperlukan tak cepat mengaku kalah.” (That’s funny... his thinking is sharp... able to think in such a situation, can be brought to battle when needed, not quick to give up.)

Since it was posted Monday (Feb 3) morning, the video has attracted 984 comments, garnered around 9,700 likes, and shared 2,500 times.
