QuickCheck: Did a herd of elephants enter plantation workers' quarters in Sabah?

In the vast landscape of Sabah, one might expect to encounter wildlife.

And given the encroachment of human beings into the habitat of local wildlife, encounters in what are now human spaces becomes an increasingly common – but no less shocking – experience

It was said recently that a herd of elephants entered plantation workers' quarters in Kalabakan, Sabah.

Is it true that such an event occurred as claimed?

VERDICT:

TRUE

KOTA KINABALU: A herd of elephants has indeed entered the plantation workers' quarters in Kalabakan, Tawau and wildlife rangers have been trying to lure the elephants into a plantation area away from the quarters.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said a team of rangers was sent to monitor and handle the situation following reports from estate workers on Thursday (Jan 23).

He added they were still waiting for updates from the field.

"The most important thing is to try and prevent any harm to humans and the elephants," he said.

A few days ago, a decapitated elephant was found in the Kalabakan area.

However, it is not yet confirmed whether both locations are close to each other.
