QuickCheck: Was a Kelantan kampung the snare for a sun bear pair?

THEY say love–or the chance of love–is one of life's "bear" necessities, and it can lead to all sorts of antics regardless of whether the amorous pair is human or animal.

Recently, it was claimed that a male sun bear was captured in an orchard near a village in Kelantan a couple of days after a female sun bear was caught at the same location.

Was a sun bear pair really caught recently in a Kelantan kampung?

VERDICT:

TRUE

According to Kelantan's Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (Perhilitan), a male sun bear was caught in Kampung Air Asahan Hulu on Sunday (June 2), less than a week after a female bear was trapped in the same orchard.

Perhilitan Kelantan director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said its staff in Jeli received complaints about a bear roaming in an orchard near the village on May 25.

"After the complaint, our staff installed a trap to catch the animal," he said on Sunday (June 2).

On May 28, they successfully trapped a female sun bear.

“Today, the (male) sun bear entered the trap," he said on Sunday (June 2).

Mohamad Hafid said the Jeli Perhilitan unit would soon relocate and release both bears.
