FOR a taxi or ehailing driver, there will always be a risk of assault or threat by malicious actors pretending to be a customer.

Recently, it was reported that an elderly taxi driver had lost his vehicle and his belongings after he was roughed up by four suspects who rented his taxi in Melaka.

Is this true?

According to Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Jamil Radzi, the 72-year-old victim was assaulted by four suspects, aged 39 to 26, who rented the victim’s taxi at the Tampin bus terminal in Pulau Sebang on Wednesday (April 17).

"The four told the victim that they wanted to go Jasin before staging the robbery by choking and hitting the elderly man midway through the trip.

"The victim fell unconscious and was abandoned at an oil palm estate in Rim, Melaka," he said on Thursday (April 18).

DSP Ahmad Jamil said the victim, who has been a taxi driver since 2010, sustained injuries.

He said the victim lodged a police report after regaining consciousness and was later sent for medical treatment.

The victim said he lost belongings, including the taxi, in the robbery.

DSP Ahmad Jamil said police managed to detain all four at a hotel in Bukit Baru.

He added that the suspects had been remanded for a week since Thursday to assist in the investigation under Section 394 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery.
