QuickCheck: Was a retiree tricked by a syndicate posing as K-drama star Lee Min-ho?

IT goes without saying that many people are fans of celebrities such as actors and pop stars, and that for a large number of them being able to communicate directly with their idol would be a dream come true.

Recently, a claim emerged that a retiree was tricked by a syndicate impersonating K-pop star and actor Lee Min-ho. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

This was confirmed by Machang OCPD Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud, who said that a 74-year-old retiree lost RM RM225,000 to a love scam syndicate posing as Lee.

Sinar Harian reported Supt Mohd Ali saying that the retiree got in touch with the syndicate through Facebook in 2022 and added that they communicated via the social media's messaging function.

He said on Wednesday (Dec 13) that the retiree was told that Lee needed money for his trial in court and added that she began a series of bank transfers from October to December.

“Six transactions were performed at a bank here, and the victim realised she had been scammed and then lodged a police report,” said Supt Mohd Adli.

He added that the case is being investigated for cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
