QuickCheck: Was there a riot at a carpark in Kanowit?

A VIDEO has been making the rounds on social media of an apparent riot allegedly in Kanowit, Sarawak.

In the video, a large crowd, most of whom are wearing red bandanas, can be seen shouting outside the local district office.

Is this video current and did a riot actually happen in Kanowit?

Verdict:

TRUE

According to a statement on its Facebook page, the Sarawak Police Contingent acknowledged that an incident occurred outside the Kanowit District office in Sibu, Sarawak at 1.30pm on Tuesday (Sept 12).

The statement went on to say that two people were injured during the riot and that the cars of those injured were also damaged.

"The cause of the incident is still under investigation," Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said in the statement on Wednesday (Sept 13).

"We urge the public to step forward and cooperate with police if they have any information regarding the incident," he said, adding that the public should contact Kanowit Criminal Investigation Division head Assistant Superintendent Mohd Faizal Nawi at 016-865 7432 or IPD Kanowit 084-752 222.

Comm Mohd Azman said the case was being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.
