QuickCheck: Was a flasher spotted at a Penang car park?

THE sight of a flasher anywhere is an unpleasant shock, and the smallest rumour that one is roaming around can go viral given the prevalence of social media.

Recently, a claim went viral online that a flasher exposed himself to a woman at a car park in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. Is there any truth to this claim?

VERDICT:

TRUE

In a statement, Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Cheng Shan confirmed that such an incident happened at a car park in Alma, Bukit Mertajam on Sunday (Sept 3).

He said that in the incident the unidentified suspect, who was riding a motorcycle, approached a car driven by a woman at a car park near a pizza restaurant.

"The suspect unzipped his pants and flashed his private parts at the victim before moving away from the place," he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 4).

ACP Tan said following the incident, the victim then lodged a police report at Bukit Mertajam police station.

He said the incident was captured in a video and was uploaded on social media showing the suspect flashing himself to the victim.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offenses 1955.

ACP Tan said police welcomed information from the public regarding the incident and that they can contact investigating officer Insp Mohd Yusrashidi Yussof at 017-433 6334 or the nearest police station.
