Two screen captures shared by the police of the video of the fight that went viral online.

DINNER is the time of day when most people kick back and relax with their loved ones while they take their last meal of the day.

However, one man had more than just a kick with his dinner, going by a video that's gone viral on social media. In the video circulating online, a man is seen eating dinner with a woman before he's approached by five men who first talk to him and then proceed to batter him with a hockey stick and even what looks like a parang.

Did this allegedly happen in Matang, Sarawak as claimed?

Verdict:

TRUE

The incident occurred at approximately 1am on Monday (Aug 21) at a restaurant in Matang near Kuching, Sarawak.

"At the time, the victim was having dinner with a female acquaintance before he was approached by five suspects," said Acting OCPD DSP Lim Jaw Shyong in a statement released on Monday.

"The suspects accused the victim of owing them money, which he denied.

"Unsatisfied with the answer, the suspects then dragged the victim out of the premises and proceeded to assault him with what looked like hockey sticks and a parang," said DSP Lim, who added that the victim then tried to escape which only intensified the assault.

"The victim was then seriously injured on the back and his legs. Realising they had injured him, the suspects then made their escape and the victim was brought to the General Hospital for treatment," added DSP Lim.

"His condition is stable but the victim is still being kept under observation due to his injuries."

DSP Lim said the police had successfully found and detained the alleged suspects and that the case was being investigated under Section 326 and 148 of the Penal Code.

He then urged the public not to speculate on the case and to stop sharing the video as it may impact the investigation.
