QuickCheck: Did pioneer female pilot Amelia Earhart make a stopover in then-British Malaya?

DECADES after her disappearance during an attempt to fly around the globe in 1937, Amelia Earhart still remains a topic of interest among many.

Over the years, it has been claimed that Earhart made a stopover in Malaysia to refuel during that ill-fated expedition. Is this claim true?

Verdict:

FALSE

Perak Heritage Association secretary Nor Hisham Zulkiflee said Earhart had only sought prior permission to land at the Tekah aerodrome in Taiping but did not land there.

He said she was headed to Singapore, and she made the request just in case she needed to refuel.

However, she never made the stopover in then-British Malaya and flew straight to Singapore – where she landed at the Kallang Aerodrome.

In 1928, Earhart became the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by airplane.

During an attempt at becoming the first woman to complete a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10-E Electra, Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean.

Investigations and significant public interest in their disappearance still continue over 80 years later.
