THEY come in a variety of colours, tastes, and textures. But, sadly, for many, ice-cream is a big no-no, especially if they are having a cold.
Is it true that ice-cream should be avoided to prevent a cold from worsening?
Verdict:
FALSE
Although many people believe that dairy products increase mucus production, there is no evidence to support it.
Milk mixed with saliva often mimics the feel of mucus. This mixture may have led to the false belief that drinking milk or consuming dairy products while sick is bad
Sometimes, the smooth and creamy texture of ice cream may be a sick person’s best bet at getting the calories they need, as it may be difficult to get other foods down.
In some cases, ice cream with plain flavours may provide temporary relief for a sore throat and from all the coughing and sneezing.
Some doctors even recommend ice cream after tonsillitis surgery, after drinking clear liquids first.
It is, however, very important to note that ice cream is NOT a cure for any sort of cold, cough or sore throat, as relieving as they may be.
A visit to the doctor should always be the first course of action.
So, the next time you get a cold or your throat is feeling scratchy, go to the doctor, get your prescription medication and take them first. Then sit back and enjoy an ice cream if you want to.
