PETALING JAYA: The residence of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur, has been declared as a prison.
Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail made the declaration under Section 3 of the Prisons Act.
This was according to the Federal Government Gazette published by the Attorney General’s Chambers yesterday.
It said the minister declared all buildings and areas, measuring 4,559 sq m (0.4559ha) at the Jalan Langgak Duta, Taman Duta residence as a prison.
“It is for the purposes of the Act for the imprisonment or detention of persons lawfully in custody,” read the declaration.
The declaration in the gazette can be found in the Federal Legislation Portal Malaysia at http://lom.agc.gov.my.
The move came about after Najib’s RM50mil fine was settled for the conditional pardon in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.
On Sept 18, he received a conditional pardon from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
It was reported that Najib’s legal team arrived at Kajang Prison at 2.15pm yesterday to submit a court order for the implementation of his house arrest.
Lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee, however, said there were still further processes before Najib could be released from prison.
Najib has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since Aug 23, 2022, after being convicted of misappropriating RM42mil in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
He filed a petition for a royal pardon on Sept 2, 2022.
