GEORGE TOWN: Two men lost their lives in separate road crashes involving a public bus in Bayan Baru and a car in Tanjung Tokong within hours of each other.

In the first incident, a 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed and a 23-year-old female pillion rider injured after their motorcycle collided with a Rapid Penang bus along Jalan Mayang Pasir, Bayan Baru, late Tuesday night (Nov 3).

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said an emergency call was received at 11.38pm, with responders reaching the scene outside Sunshine Square 1 five minutes later.

"Firefighters found the woman trapped at the front of the bus, while the male rider was unconscious underneath the front section," John said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 4).

Rescue personnel extricated the woman, identified as Amelia Moey May Lyn, 23, at 11.55pm. She received initial treatment from a Sungai Ara community ambulance crew before being rushed to Penang Hospital.

The rider, Goy Wee Sherng, 29, was freed at 12.30am but pronounced dead at the scene by Malaysian Red Crescent Society paramedics. The bus driver escaped unhurt. Eight firefighters from the Bayan Baru station managed the operation.

Hours later, a man in his 30s was killed when his Toyota Vios skidded off the road near Straits Quay in Tanjung Tokong.

John said firefighters from the Bagan Jermal station responded to an emergency call at 6.35am on Wednesday (Nov 4) and arrived at the scene five minutes later.

Personnel extricated the unconscious driver from the wreckage by 6.55am. However, Ministry of Health medical officers confirmed he had succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His body was handed over to the police for further action.
