Schoolboy hit by car at zebra crossing

KOTA KINABALU: An 11-year-old schoolboy was seriously injured after being struck by a car while using a pedestrian crossing in front of SK Darau in Menggatal.

The boy suffered head injuries and was taken to a hospital in Likas for treatment following the 6.10am incident yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Shahrudin Mat Husain said that initial investigations found that the car, driven by a 69-year-old man, was travelling from Menggatal town towards a supermarket.

He said the pupil had begun crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing when the car approached.

“Due to the short distance, the driver was unable to avoid the collision and hit the pupil,” he said in a statement.

ACP Shahrudin said the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged anyone with information on the incident to contact investigating officer Sjn Mazlan Mursalam at 012-3036605 or the nearest police station.

“We advise all road users to drive carefully and responsibly and obey traffic regulations for the safety of everyone,” he added.

A CCTV recording of the incident, which has been widely shared on social media, showed the boy getting out of a car on the opposite side of the road before walking towards the school.

He was using the zebra crossing when he was hit by the car.
