BUKIT MERTAJAM: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh failed to get the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to drop a charge against him for causing alarm to public safety.
The charge relates to him having allegedly committed the offence through his social media account in August last year.
Penang state prosecution director Muna Mohamed Jaafar conveyed the matter during proceedings before Magistrate Roshayati Radellah.
However, lawyer Aizat Azam, representing Dr Muhamad Akmal alongside 10 other lawyers, said the defence will apply to submit a second representation following the rejection.
Muna said the prosecution had no objection to the second application and would forward it to the AGC.
“We have no objection if the lawyers wish to submit another representation,” she said.
The court then fixed Jan 4 next year as the next mention date to follow up on the developments of the second representation, Bernama reported.
In August 2025, Dr Muhamad Akmal pleaded not guilty to a charge of issuing a statement likely to cause public alarm and public unrest.
He was alleged to have issued the statement through a social media post at about 3pm on Aug 11, 2025.
The charge was framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
