KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has condemned the deregistration of Perikatan Nasional, saying the decision appeared to pre-empt a court ruling and restrict constitutionally guaranteed democratic rights.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party was disappointed with the move, conveyed through a notice issued by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) dated Tuesday (Oct 20).
"This move is disappointing as we view it as pre-empting a court decision and restricting democratic rights guaranteed by the Constitution, reflecting the government’s growing fear," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 21).
"We (PAS) maintain that all aspects of Perikatan's administration and management have been carried out in an orderly manner and in accordance with the coalition’s constitution.
"Ties among its component parties remain strong, except for one party that has distanced itself from the coalition and changed allegiance."
He said all subsequent steps, including preparations for the Melaka state election and legal action to challenge the decision, will be undertaken collectively with like-minded Perikatan component parties.
"We (PAS) appreciate the support of members, supporters and fence-sitters who are hoping for a change in the country’s leadership.
"We also urge all parties to respect the law and democratic principles," he said.
The ROS deregistered Perikatan under Subparagraph 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act 1966 on Tuesday.
