IPOH: Steps are being taken to reduce conflict between humans and elephants at Bukit Bangkong in Chemor, here, says the Wildlife and National Parks Departments (Perhilitan).
A department spokesman said they have been monitoring the area since Oct 4, with measures being carried out between Oct 11 and 17.
"We've received complaints about a herd of elephants on Sept 27, Oct 3 and Oct 11.
"Field observations indicated that the herd of wild elephants had moved away from the area where the complaints originated, following the implementation of these control measures," the spokesman said in a statement Wednesday (Oct 21).
"Perhilitan will continue to conduct periodic monitoring in the Bukit Bangkong area and implement further control measures if necessary.
"These efforts aim to mitigate the risk of human-wildlife conflict, while safeguarding the safety of local residents and their property," the spokesman added.
It was reported that a herd of wild elephants had encroached into fruit orchards in the area on Oct 15.
The same herd is also believed to have destroyed crops and plantation infrastructure in Kampung Perlop 1 in Sungai Siput.
The spokesman said Perhilitan also provided advisory services to complainants regarding preliminary preventive steps to reduce the risk of disturbances by wild elephants.
"Recommended measures include installing lights around agricultural areas and using controlled campfires, while always prioritising safety.
"Complainants are also urged to promptly notify the department if disturbances recur, so that follow-up action can be taken," the spokesman said.
"Complaints or information may be submitted via the Perhilitan hotline at 1-800-88-5151, or its website www.wildlife.gov.my through the Public Complaint Management System," the spokesman added.
