‘It’s like she’s still with us’, Irene Sofiya’s granddad says

BATU PAHAT: Since her passing about two weeks ago, Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal’s presence is still felt strongly at home.

Her grandfather Khyar Abbas, 69, said the family has kept the belongings of Irene Sofiya, fondly known as Fiya, untouched at their home in Kampung Parit Selamat, Yong Peng here.

“Her things - from her clothes, novels, trophies and school bag - are still in her room.

“I see her everywhere and at every corner of the house. It is like she is still with us,” he said when met at their home on Thursday (Oct 15).

Irene Sofiya, 16, was found covered in blood in a hall at SMK Dato’ Seth in Yong Peng at about 5.30pm on Oct 3.

A 16-year-old male student has been charged at the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court with her murder on Thursday (Oct 15).

Khyar said he did not attend court as he needed to be at a doctor’s appointment in the morning, but hopes that justice would be served for my granddaughter.

He added that the accused’s family has yet to pay them a visit since the incident, saying that it was “still too fresh in our minds”.

“Maybe somewhere down the road, we are bound to meet since we are from the same village,” he said.
