KUALA LUMPUR: The Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) as Malaysia moves towards smarter highways, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The Works Minister said AI was already being used in the management, planning and maintenance of roads, including federal, state and local authority roads.
"We must keep pace with global industry players because technology is evolving rapidly.
"AI is already being applied in the management, planning and maintenance of our roads, including federal roads, state roads and roads under local authorities.
"As for the MLFF system when it is fully implemented, it will certainly incorporate AI as well," he said at a press conference after launching the 13th Malaysian Road Conference and Exhibition 2026 as well as the 16th International Road Federation Global Asia-Pacific Regional Congress on Tuesday (Oct 13).
He was responding to questions on the use of AI for smart highways development in Malaysia, including its incorporation into the MLFF system.
In September, Nanta said the implementation of MLFF will not be rushed as parties involved have been given more time to work out the details.
He said parties involved had been given a timeline, with several platforms already being considered, although the details remained under negotiation.
The MLFF system in Malaysia is a barrier-free and seamless toll payment system designed to improve traffic flow.
It was reported that the project would adopt a B2B approach, with concessionaires appointing service providers to implement the system without imposing financial implications on the government.
Based on reports, the system will be implemented in stages, beginning with the Single Lane Fast Flow (SLFF) system in 2027, following the finalisation of the necessary amendments to the relevant Acts and legislation.
