BANTING: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, officiated the renaming of Dataran Morib to Dataran Dato' Seri Harun Idris at Pantai Morib here Sunday (Oct 11).
Also present was the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, while Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari accompanied the Ruler during the ceremony.
The renaming honours the late Datuk Seri Harun Idris, the eighth Selangor mentri besar, in recognition of his contributions to the state. He also served as the Morib assemblyman.
In a statement, Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) said the square officially reopened to the public on Sunday following the completion of the RM60.50mil Morib Beach Conservation Project on July 1.
The federal government project was implemented by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry in collaboration with the Irrigation and Drainage Department.
According to MPKL, the project was undertaken following a high-tide incident on Sept 18, 2020, which caused a retaining wall to collapse and damage the coastal area.
The conservation works included beach nourishment along a 750m stretch, construction of a 750m seawall, two offshore breakwaters and two beacon lights.
Meanwhile, the Selangor government has allocated RM55mil under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) for three coastal conservation projects in Kuala Langat.
Of this amount, RM15mil is allocated for erosion-control structures and beach nourishment at Pantai Kampung Endah (Istana Bahagia).
Another RM20mil will fund erosion-control structures and upgrading of the coastal bund at Pantai Batu Laut, while RM20mil has been allocated for erosion-control structures and beach nourishment at Pantai Tumbuk.
MPKL said the square had also undergone upgrades to its facilities and infrastructure, with the improvements expected to attract more domestic and international tourists. - Bernama
