KUCHING: The significance of the increased federal allocation of RM16.2bil to Sarawak in Budget 2027 lies in the details, says Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

“We need to look at the details of the budget – how much is allocated for new projects and how much is for continuing previous projects,” he said.

Under Budget 2027, Sarawak received an allocation of RM16.2bil in federal funds.

On healthcare, Dr Sim said the proposal for two government dental specialist centres in Kuching was a good start but pointed out that Sarawak also needs a regional blood bank and central laboratory.

“As for dilapidated clinics and hospitals, Sarawak needs RM8.9bil (for their repair),” he said.

Dr Sim also thanked the Federal Government for increasing the Public Service Department’s (JPA) scholarships for Sabah and Sarawak students.

He said Sarawak already offers free tertiary education to Sarawakian students at state-owned universities, including monthly pocket money for those who are eligible.

Senator Abun Sui Anyit said the proposed increase in PSD sponsorship should take into account students from low-income families, rural communities and interior areas.

“For children from areas such as Belaga and Hulu Rajang, their challenges involve not only tuition fees but also transport, accommodation and living expenses.

“Therefore, educational assistance must be implemented comprehensively so that opportunities to pursue higher education are not enjoyed only by those with financial means,” he said.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor described Budget 2027 as a comprehensive budget that alleviates the people’s financial burden and reflects the strength of the country’s economy.

“I see this budget as benefiting all Malaysians through tax reductions and incentives for civil servants, businesses and all segments of society.

“It demonstrates the strength of our country’s economy and financial position despite the impact of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.”

Hajiji said Sabah continues to be the biggest recipient of federal allocation with RM18.6bil for next year.
