Four arrested in Kelantan for migrant smuggling

KOTA BARU: Police have arrested four migrant smuggling suspects in an operation at Jalan Gua Musang-Lojing here.

Gua Musang OCPD Supt Sik Choon Foo said the suspects, two men and two women aged between 19 and 36, all locals, were believed to have transported the six foreigners from here to Kuala Lumpur.

He said at about 3pm on Sunday (Oct 4), a team from the district police headquarters tailed three suspicious vehicles from Jalan Gua Musang-Kota Baru towards Jalan Gua Musang-Lojing.

"The drivers attempted to flee after noticing police presence but were successfully stopped after a chase.

"An inspection of a car found six foreigners, three men and three women from Indonesia and Myanmar, who failed to produce valid travel documents," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 7).

Sik said police also seized three vehicles and five mobile phones to assist investigations.

A substance suspected to be methamphetamine weighing 1.45g was also found in one of the vehicles.

He said the main case is being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, while one of the suspects is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"Police are still conducting further investigations to track down other individuals involved, including members of the smuggling network," he said. – Bernama
