PETALING JAYA: The country is mourning the loss of a highly respected woman who was close to the hearts of Malaysians, said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following the passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali.
"My family and I extend our deepest condolences to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the entire family," he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 28).
"For decades, we have all witnessed the deceased as Tun’s life partner, sharing their days, raising a family and standing by him as he carried the responsibility of serving the nation," Ahmad Zahid added.
"It is difficult to imagine how profound the loneliness must be when losing someone who had been by his side for so long."
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said Dr Siti Hasmah would be remembered for her service as a doctor and her concern for the wellbeing of society.
"Her gentleness, simplicity and steadfastness throughout her life made her a beloved figure and a role model for Malaysians," he said.
He prayed that God forgive Dr Siti Hasmah, accept her good deeds and place her among the faithful, while granting strength and patience to Dr Mahathir and his family.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil also expressed his condolences, stating that words could not fully express the sadness over the passing of someone who contributed so greatly to the country.
"Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was a woman who stood firmly behind a prominent figure, accompanying every step, every struggle, every fall and rise, through quiet sacrifice," Fahmi said.
"She was a pillar of strength beside Tun Dr Mahathir."
Fahmi added that Dr Siti Hasmah’s service, love and sacrifice would always be remembered by the nation.
