SEREMBAN: What was supposed to be a highly anticipated meeting between Mentri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim and his exco with Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar fell through after it was cancelled due to security concerns.
The meeting, which was to introduce Tunku Nadzaruddin to members of the state administration, was supposed to have started at 9am but had to be called off about 90 minutes later following advice from the authorities.
“All parties were advised to cancel the meeting to allow for a cooling-off period. What I can confirm now is that the meeting is off,” a source said.
In a media invite issued on Monday, the meeting organiser said the event was an “ice-breaking” session and to strengthen ties between the Mentri Besar, the exco members and Tunku Nadzaruddin, following his proclamation as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar by the Undang (ruling chiefs) and Tunku Besar Tampin.
Also scheduled to attend the meeting were the Undang of Johol and three other Undang whose position is in dispute, the Tunku Besar Tampin and the former Dato’ Shahbandar Sungei Ujong.
Tunku Nadzaruddin and the six were at the official residence of the Undang of Sungei Ujong to head for the meeting when they were said to have been stopped from leaving the house.
An aide to the group claimed they were not allowed to leave. There was also a large police presence outside the residence.
Later, the same aide informed the press that Tunku Nadzaruddin and the rest were allowed to leave after the meeting was called off.
Earlier in the morning, Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Awaludin Said as well as assemblymen from Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional had gathered at the Tuanku Ja’afar Gallery, but they left shortly after.
The media was informed that the gathering would take place at a nearby hotel.
Checks revealed that Ismail and members of his administration were having breakfast in the coffee house, which was restricted to media personnel.
At about 10.30am, Ismail and his team left abruptly.
On June 5, the Undang (ruling chiefs), the Tunku Besar Tampin and Dato’ Shabandar Sungei Ujong Datuk Seri Badarudin Abd Khalid, had proclaimed Tunku Nadzaruddin as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.
However, the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) – the highest authority governing matters related to the four Undang – rejected the proclamation and declared it unconstitutional, null and void.
It said the act violated both the adat (customary traditions) and the Laws of the Constitution of Negri Sembilan 1959.
The DKU said the signing of a document by the six individuals to depose Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir was an act of treason.
On Sept 17, the Attorney-General’s Chambers issued an official statement declaring that the Mentri Besar and the state exco had no constitutional or unilateral powers to remove Tuanku Muhriz, rendering a purported proclamation to depose him invalid and unconstitutional.
