RM1.5mil raised to secure social security protection for 500 gig workers

PETALING JAYA: Platform providers have contributed RM1.5 million to secure social security protection for 500 gig workers, including e-hailing drivers and p-hailing riders, says Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.

Foodpanda led the initiative with RM1mil, followed by Grab (RM500,000) and Halo (RM14,412.40), said the Human Resources Minister at the launch of Social Security Organisation’s three-day iLINDUNGu Mega Festival on Saturday (Sept 19).

“Behind every rider and driver is a family that depends on their income. This is why social protection is not something that can be taken lightly,” said Ramanan.

The three-day festival, which began on Friday (Sept 18), features a dedicated counter for workers to opt back into the protection scheme, alongside employer discounts of up to 80% on Late Payment Contribution Interest.

Additionally, the festival’s MYFutureJobs segment offers 2,000 job opportunities from 25 employers, with salaries reaching up to RM12,000.

“An integrated approach enables the public to obtain information, advice and direct access to various government services under one roof,” says Ramanan.
