PETALING JAYA: Appropriate and proportionate legal action must be taken against those responsible for mocking the Rukun Negara in a theatre play, says Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.
The National Unity Minister stated that such conduct is irresponsible, extreme and completely unacceptable.
Previous reports indicated that the viral video featured performers exchanging directives to "go back" to China, India and Indonesia–framed around the punchline ‘This is Malaysia’.
During the performance, characters recited the Rukun Negara while interjecting mocking remarks after every line. One performer appeared dressed solely in red underwear, with red and white lettering painted across his body.
“Freedom of artistic expression and freedom of speech should never be used as an excuse to demean national institutions, incite provocation, or commit acts that have the potential to undermine societal harmony,” said the minister in a statement on Sept 18.
“I request the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation, and to take appropriate action should there be any violation of the law.
He said that the investigation must consider all relevant in-force legal provisions, including the Penal Code, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Sedition Act 1948, and any other applicable laws.
“This firmness is crucial as a reminder that the freedom enjoyed by every citizen comes with the responsibility to respect the law, national institutions, and societal harmony.
“There is no room for any party to mock matters touching upon the Royal institution, national sovereignty and the foundational pillars that shape life in our country.
“Malaysia is a nation practising parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the head of state.
He said the Rukun Negara was not merely a recitation read at official functions but a national ideology and philosophy, including a guiding principle in building a united nation.
“I call upon all parties, including artists, content creators and social media users, to exercise their available freedom responsibly.
“Creativity must not serve as a license to insult, and freedom cannot be separated from responsibility,” he added.
