PETALING JAYA: An estimated 3.28 million vehicles will use major highways daily during peak travel days for Deepavali, with traffic set to increase as early as Thursday (Nov 5).
Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) director-general Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff said highways heading towards the East Coast, northern and southern regions would see heavier traffic.
"The PLUS highway network is expected to record 2.24 million vehicles, followed by the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) with 288,000, Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway with 190,000 and West Coast Expressway (WCE) with 168,000," he said in a statement on Thursday.
He added that highway concessionaires had been directed to make thorough preparations to ensure motorists enjoy safe and smooth journeys.
"Maintenance works involving lane closures will be suspended from Friday to Tuesday (Nov 6 to 10), except for emergency repairs such as pothole patching.
"Smart lanes will also be activated at 30 locations along PLUS highways.
"Additional toll lanes will be provided at selected plazas, while extra parking spaces and portable toilets will be made available at several rest and recreation areas along the North-South Expressway (NSE), Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and East Coast Expressway (ECE)," he said.
Hadzmir advised motorists to plan their journeys using the MyPLUS-TTA application for the NSE and the Travel Time Advisory (TTA) for the KLK and ECE Phase 1.
He said LLM's traffic management centre would operate daily from 7am to 10pm.
