IPOH: A 36-year-old woman lost RM41,215 after falling victim to an online job scam involving purported product evaluation tasks on an e-commerce shopping platform.
Muallim OCPD Supt Khalid Mohamad said the victim received the job offer via WhatsApp on Sept 13, promising rewards for completing product evaluation tasks on the platform.
“The victim was then instructed to make several money transfers to bank accounts provided by the suspect.
“On Sept 15, she made six transactions totalling RM41,215 before being asked to make a further payment of RM32,800,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Sept 17).
Supt Khalid said the victim realised that she had been cheated and did not make the additional payment.
He said police had opened an investigation paper into the case, which was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
He advised the public to be wary of job and investment offers promoted online through social media or in person.
“The public is advised to verify such offers with the relevant agencies before deciding to participate in any investment scheme.
“They should also check bank account numbers through the Semak Mule portal and contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 if they become victims of online financial scams,” he said.
