SANDAKAN: More women should step forward to take part in policymaking and leadership, including through politics, says Datuk Julita Majungki.
The Sabah Women, Health and People's Wellbeing Minister said those aspiring to higher decision-making roles should make use of the avenues available to them.
"If we want to be involved at a higher level, particularly in decision-making and policymaking at the state government level, including as elected representatives, then come forward.
"To become a Yang Berhormat or a minister, one has to go through politics," she said when officiating the Sandakan district Pesona Wanita Carnival here on Saturday (Sept 12).
Julita said women now account for 42.22% of those in decision-making positions in Sabah's public service and government agencies, surpassing the 30% target.
She said the state viewed women not merely as recipients of development but also as decision-makers, community leaders, economic drivers and pillars of their families.
She said women must have fair access to education, healthcare, protection, technology, economic opportunities and leadership.
Julita also called for women to be equipped with financial and digital literacy, access to markets, business guidance and stronger support networks.
"When women's incomes increase, family resilience also improves and the local economy becomes more dynamic," she said.
She added that women's empowerment was not the responsibility of women alone, saying men also had a role in sharing family responsibilities, supporting children's education and respecting women's rights.
Julita urged government departments and agencies to continue expanding services to districts and communities, while women organisations and community leaders should help identify issues on the ground and connect those in need with the appropriate assistance.
