MELAKA: A delivery rider who crashed into a tree in Semabok is not linked to an illegal race that occurred here, say the police.
The 24-year-old was killed in the accident after he lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to skid and hit the tree, Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Halim Abas said.
He said the police received a report on the crash at about 2.30am yesterday and preliminary investigations found that the victim, Muhammad Hakimin A. Samah, was travelling from Kandang towards the city centre.
“The victim sustained injuries to his head, body and legs, and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.
On the illegal race, ACP Halim said the police arrested two motorcyclists and impounded eight motorcycles during an enforcement operation against suspected motorcyclists.
He said the operation was mounted after the police received a public complaint at 3.10am yesterday concerning a group of motorcyclists allegedly riding recklessly along the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) highway.
ACP Halim said that a 29-second video purportedly showing the group’s activities had also gone viral on social media.
He said police patrol units were mobilised to conduct surveillance and enforcement at several identified locations.
“Two individuals were arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 on suspicion of reckless and dangerous riding.
“Eight motorcycles were also impounded during the operation conducted at several locations along AMJ,” he said.
ACP Halim said the police issued a total of 97 summonses for various traffic offences during the operation.
He said the authorities were mindful that the growing number of activities and events held across the state had attracted more visitors, resulting in heavier traffic and increased motorcycle movements at several popular locations.
“Police will intensify patrols, surveillance and enforcement to curb mat rempit activities while ensuring that public safety and order are preserved,” he added.
