KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has confirmed that a 62-year-old Malaysian man from Selangor has been detained by Indian authorities after 3.42kg of hydroponic cannabis was found concealed in a secret compartment of his luggage at Chennai International Airport.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the department was informed by India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) about the arrest.
He said the suspect had travelled to Chennai on an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 on Aug 31.
“Chennai Customs officers inspected the suspect’s luggage and found 3.42kg of hydroponic cannabis concealed in a secret compartment,” he said when contacted on Friday (Sept 4).
Comm Hussein said the suspect is currently being detained by Chennai Customs and would be investigated under India's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
"We will maintain contact with the Indian authorities to obtain further information on the case," he added.
The case is the latest involving Malaysians arrested in Chennai for allegedly carrying hydroponic cannabis.
Previously on Aug 8, a 54-year-old Malaysian man from Perak was arrested in Chennai with 4.03kg of hydroponic cannabis after arriving from Bangkok.
Indian Customs authorities officially confirmed that case, while Bukit Aman said the drugs were believed to have been sourced from Thailand.
