Suspected drug dealer brandishes parang, threatens to kill cops in Jeli raid

JELI: A policeman was injured during a scuffle with a man believed to be a drug dealer before the suspect brandished a parang at police during a raid in Kampung Lubuk Bongor here on Wednesday (Aug 19), Sinar Harian reports.

Jeli OCPD Supt Kamarulzaman Harun told the Malay language daily that the incident occurred at about 11am when a team of officers and personnel from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Jeli district police headquarters raided an unnumbered house in the village.

“As police officers tried to make the arrest, a scuffle broke out between the suspect and a member of the raiding team, causing the policeman to suffer injuries to the middle finger of his left hand and his left shoulder,” he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 21).

He said the suspect was arrested and police seized a parang measuring about 36cm during an inspection.

“Also found was a transparent plastic packet containing six reddish pills believed to be yaba pills.

“The pills were found in a black waist bag,” he said.

Kamarulzaman said initial investigations found that the suspect was wanted by the Jeli district Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division for allegedly being active in drug trafficking in the district.

“The suspect will be brought to court for a remand order under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist further investigations,” he said.

The case is also being investigated under Sections 324 and 353 of the Penal Code and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
