Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for Kedah, Penang and Perak


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across three northern states in Peninsular Malaysia on Tuesday (Aug 18).

In Kedah, the weather alert covers Kuala Muda, Baling, Kulim, Bandar Baharu, Sik and Langkawi until 3pm.

Over in Penang, severe weather is expected until 3pm across Seberang Perai Selatan, Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Utara.

In Perak, an initial warning is in place until 3pm for Kerian, Larut Matang, Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Hilir Perak and Bagan Datuk, while a separate alert extends until 4pm for Batang Padang, Muallim, Kampar and Kinta.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at noon on Tuesday.
