KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is planning to conduct a cloud-seeding operation to mitigate the current hot and dry spell.
Deputy Premier Datuk Douglas Uggah, who is also SDMC chairman, said the operation will focus on dam and water catchment areas to ensure the stability of water supply and reservoir levels in the state.
"This aims to increase the potential of rainfall in the target areas while helping to sustain the state's water supply," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 14).
Uggah said the operation, which will be conducted in cooperation with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), is subject to the availability of suitable clouds and favourable atmospheric and meteorological conditions.
He said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) will conduct technical assessments and analysis to determine the suitable conditions, time and place for the operation.
"SDMC will continue to work closely with Nadma, METMalaysia, state Natural Resources and Environment Board, Environment Department, Fire and Rescue Department, utility agencies and other relevant agencies to monitor and mitigate the haze and fire risks in a coordinated and effective manner," he added.
