PETALING JAYA: A social media post purportedly showing the acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police announcing a special operation to track down corrupt offenders has been exposed as fake.
Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali, in a statement yesterday, said the post was false and that no such press conference had been held.
“The acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Comm Datuk Seri Ibrahim Darus) has never held such a press conference or issued any statement as depicted and claimed in the post.
“The content circulated uses fabricated images and identity, as well as the position of the acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police, to create the impression that the purported statement represents the official position of the police.
“Such actions could potentially mislead the public, cause misunderstanding and undermine the credibility of the individual and the police institution,” he said.
He added that a police report had been lodged over the matter and investigations were ongoing.
“The police take seriously any attempt to produce, manipulate or disseminate false content using the identity, image or position of any officer or member of the force to create the impression that a statement or action is official.”
