IPOH: A 54-year-old man is believed to have been tied up, beaten and fatally stomped on by fellow residents at a care home in Tanjung Rambutan, after they were unable to cope with his alleged aggressive behaviour and repeated disturbances.
This was what initial police investigations revealed, resulting in the death of the victim, said Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin.
“A caregiver is believed to have instructed that the victim be tied up before several residents, together with the caregiver, began hitting and stepping on him.
“The post-mortem confirmed that the victim died from blunt trauma injuries to the head,” he said at a press conference after a rank-wearing and handing over of duties ceremony yesterday.
He said the incident is believed to have occurred on Monday night after the victim became aggressive and disturbed other residents.
He added that police received a call regarding his death at 5.41pm the following day.
Mohd Alwi said that five men, comprising four residents and a caregiver aged between 35 and 55, were arrested and have been remanded until Aug 8 to assist in the investigations.
He added that preliminary checks found that the home had been operating since 2012 and was only registered as a business with the Companies Commission of Malaysia.
“So far, no documents have been produced to show that the home was registered or had a valid operating licence from the Welfare Department, Ipoh City Council or approval from the Health Ministry.
“The premises were also found to be without closed-circuit television cameras,” he added.
He said that appropriate action would also be taken against the home if other violations are found.
It was reported that the victim, who was one of 21 residents at the home, was placed there by his family.
