KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg targets regional leadership in sustainable agriculture by leveraging state land resources, biodiversity, and renewable energy.
He said this when he opened the Congress on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Bintulu on Monday (Aug 3). He outlined plans to transform regional agriculture into a technology-driven, high-income industry.
"Building on the encouraging progress achieved in Gedong, the AgriHub approach continues to be extended to other strategic locations, supporting Sarawak's broader agenda for sustainable agricultural development," he said.
The strategy focuses on precision agriculture, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy integration.
He said Sarawak will establish a School of Veterinary and Animal Science. The facility aims to build local capacity in veterinary medicine, animal health and livestock development.
Abang Johari urged participants to explore solutions incorporating circular economy principles and digital technologies. He emphasised partnerships across academia, industry, government, and local communities.
"The future of agriculture must be one that empowers farmers, attracts young talent, encourages entrepreneurship and strengthens community resilience," he said.
