Cops probe dog killing, Veterinary Dept to do post-mortem

KLANG: The police have opened a probe into the killing of a dog during an operation to catch strays in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah.

South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Lim Jit Huey said the police are investigating the case under Section 428 of the Penal Code, which covers mischief by killing or maiming an animal.

“The incident occurred on July 29 around 10.50pm in front of a house in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah in Port Klang. It took place during a community operation to capture stray dogs conducted by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) with the assistance of local residents,” he said.

Lim said the dog’s carcass has been sent to the Veterinary Department for a post-mortem.

Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) alleged that Rocky the dog was beaten, strangled and dragged to its death by a group of men during the incident.

It said neighbours witnessed the incident while Rocky’s owner arrived only after the dog had been placed in a noose.

SAFM alleged that the owner was assaulted while trying to save Rocky, being hit several times on his right arm with a piece of wood, while another man restrained him from getting to his dog.

The group also alleged that two officers from the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) were present while Rocky was being strangled.

“MBDK must explain why the act was not stopped immediately.”

On Friday, the MBDK defended its dog catching operation and claimed that an individual acted aggressively by attempting to cut the loop equipment with a knife and threatened to harm them if the dog was not released.

“The pulling and commotion disrupted the efforts of MBDK personnel to release and remove the equipment for the animal’s safety, resulting in the animal’s death,” they said.
