KUALA LUMPUR: The alleged involvement of several police personnel in an extortion case should not overshadow the dedication and professionalism of the vast majority of officers, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
While describing the alleged misconduct as deeply regrettable and inexcusable, the Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said the individuals involved were "the exceptions, not the rule".
"The majority of our policemen carry out their duties with courage and dedication," Lee said on Tuesday (July 28).
"Day in and day out, they work to maintain public order, protect our communities, fight criminal activity and keep our streets safe," he said.
Lee said police officers have made immense contributions in upholding the rule of law and ensuring public safety, deserving recognition and appreciation for their service.
However, he stressed that the alleged wrongdoing by a handful of officers should not be overlooked.
He said allegations of extortion, particularly when foreign nationals were among the alleged victims, strike at the heart of public trust in the law enforcement system.
"Such actions damage the reputation of the entire force, erode confidence in our institutions and can harm the country's standing in the eyes of the world," Lee said.
He welcomed the authorities' firm action in investigating the case, saying those found guilty must face the full consequences of their actions.
"This will send a clear message that such behaviour will never be tolerated," he said.
He also called for stronger checks and balances within the police force to ensure the highest standards of integrity and professionalism are maintained.
"We must never allow the misdeeds of a small minority to overshadow the excellent work done by the many," Lee said.
"By acting decisively against those who break the law, and continuing to support the vast majority of officers who serve us well, we can uphold the integrity of our police force and the trust of the people they serve," he added.
