KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations into the alleged extortion of a foreigner by police personnel have led to the arrest of the complainant after checks showed he was wanted for scam crimes in China.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus, in a statement on Tuesday (July 28), said the discovery was made after checks with Interpol.
"However, checks through Interpol revealed that the complainant is actually a Chinese national who is wanted in China for fraud-related offences involving scam activities," Fadil said.
"In addition, authorities found discrepancies in the passport submitted by the complainant. The passport stated that he was born in Pontianak, Indonesia, whereas Interpol records indicated that his place of birth is China," he added.
The complainant was arrested alongside two others on July 27, though one of the arrested women was later released after her immigration documents were confirmed to be authentic.
Both remaining suspects have been remanded for 14 days, with investigations being conducted under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Passports Act 1966.
Turning to the detained police, Fadil said a total of 15 policemen were arrested as part of their investigation into the case.
"The complainant and his two female companions alleged that a group of between 12 and 15 individuals, including a woman, introduced themselves as police officers before raiding their condominium unit along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur," Fadil said.
"The group accused the complainant of being a scam syndicate member involved in operations in Kuala Lumpur and China," he said.
"After being brought to Kuala Lumpur contingent headquarters, two police officers allegedly instructed the complainant to transfer a sum of money into a bank account provided by them in order to avoid being detained. Fearing arrest, the complainant transferred the money as instructed," he added.
"Acting on information received, the contingent and Dang Wangi police arrested 15 policemen in connection with the case. All of those arrested were later released on police bail after initial investigation procedures were completed," he said.
